With the introduction of magnetic technology like tape drives and floppy disks, portable storage became possible. However, the focus shifted to optical discs (CDs and DVDs), as a means of storage. These discs were not very portable or efficient given the rapid advancement in technology.

The IBM-developed flash drive was the next in line. It was a non-volatile USB Storage drive. Users could save and transfer data quickly and conveniently without the need for additional software. As it was more compact and durable, this evolution in portable data storage was quickly adopted.

The name "Flash Drive" comes from the type of flash memory it uses. Because of its quicker read-write operations, flash memory is an Electronically Erasable and Programmable read-only memory or EEPROM.

They are manufactured in the range of megabytes up to several terabytes. The most popular form factor is the USB Connector/plug, which has advanced significantly from USB 1.0 to USB 4.0 at a faster rate. Distinguished by toughness and strength, are also known as Thumb drives, Data Travellers, Jump Drives, Memory Sticks, etc. However, the term "Pen Drive" has been the linguistic preference in different parts of the world.

Functionality and Uses:

  • Data Transfer: These flash drives come in handy in the exchange of data amongst computers mainly in the absence of internet connectivity where files are too bulky to be communicated through the net.
  • Data Backup: They are often used to backup important files such as documents, presentations, photos, and videos.
  • Bootable Drives: They serve as removable, bootable drives to install operating systems or for system recovery tasks.
  • Portable Applications: Portable Applications such as web browsers or office suite applications can be used in any compatible computer if plugged in a flash drive with such applications installed.
  • Security and Encryption: Some advanced flash drives include hardware encryption features, making them suitable for confidential or sensitive information.
  • Media Storage: Flash Drives of high storage options are available to store and transport high-resolution media files such as movies, music, photos, and other multimedia files.
